I still love my paperback....

Imagine, lying in bed on a rainy night, the wind just right, your pillow propped comfortably, your warm milk at your side,...ahhhh now I’m ready to turn the pages of my E-BOOK!!!!! Yes, that’s right, my E-book. Gone are the days when the choice was between hard cover and paper back novel…now its either I use an Ipad or kindle to read my E-BOOK!!!!! The E-book has arrived. An e-book is an electronic representation of a text. Some key features include: audio, animation and its interactive nature. There are many convincing educational advantages of using this type of book that we can integrate in our classrooms to help our struggling readers. They are: Motivational Help in the development of fluency Aids in vocabulary building Strengthens comprehension skills However, one should not be fooled, not all Ebooks are of the best quality and some may not be rightly suited for our learners. Good ebooks should include the following characteristics: Clear navigation Audio must be clear and must have a “play back” option They should be recorded in a quiet space. The typography should be legible Images contained must support text. This new technology is indeed attractive and very interesting to say the least. Personally, it’s a tad difficult for me to sit and read off a screen, I much prefer to sit and read text on paper. However, I do embrace the qualities and benefits of the e-book. But for tonight and maybe tomorrow as well, I will be curling up with my paper back novel, “He drown She in the Sea” and not worrying what may happen to the novel if I were to fall asleep and roll over on it.

  1. I certainly welcome your sense of humour on the issue of ebooks. Like you, I appreciate the potential of the ebook in aiding in reading instruction. The interactive nature of the ebook also encourages pupils to become active participants and independent learners in the reading process.

One of the features I am especially impressed with is the dictionary feature which provides explanations of difficult terms without the child having to search in another book. This is helpful because it allows the child to be more focused in the text.

Although I would like to own an ebook, I still treasure my traditional books because the cosy feelings I get as I pass my hand over a well- textured book cover and the comforting smell of a new book cannot be captured from an ebook.

  2. Hello Amanda I totally agree with the paper backs, I enjoy a good read and the smell of a brand new novel by my favorite author. Posted on my blog are some of the values of e-books to education. My reading in my personal life- some things I will not change.
I often wonder if technology has become the new market place for gadgets that entice us to buy and its all about the money. Have you noticed how advertisers market the latest technology gadget as “your life will not be complete without it” I ask my self what if the internet fails for one day a whole 24 hours what is the back up plan for businesses hospitals and all those individuals who swear by cloud computing?

All that aside I find the creation of e-books was and will continue to be an enjoyable experience. It was very easy to use and I practiced creating others at home without the stress of having to remember how to do things in order to get a finished product. I realized that this will be one of the activities that I will enjoy doing with my students and also hope that I will learn from them through observation how best it can be used for classroom instruction.

  3. Gosh i can't get into e-books either. Well at least not when i'm reading for enjoyment. there's a certain luxury to sitting in your bed, or at the beach leaning back on a tree and reading a book.

A real life book, with pages, that smells like paper or dust or ink. And having it in your hand, putting it to the side when you need a break.

i could probably do an e-book for a course, you know instead of walking around with a heavy textbook, and it would be something that i wouldn't have to read from cover to cover.

But not for leisure, to me the point of a book is to take a break from the computer screen.

  4. Oh geed. I prefer not having the dust though. DUST = sinus attack.
I love reading myself and I prefer having the novel or text in my hand but sometimes the availability of the e-book kinda has me borderline.
Sometimes the computer screen can be quite a nuisance especially if you're sitting there all day everyday but when I was introduced to the concept of e-books and read an article that spoke about interactive ones, I was blown away. No need to get up and find a dictionary.

Then there are audio books, which I guess are electronic books to some extent. It helps to improve my aural skills which at times aren't the best. I remember the time TRYING to listen to J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". Wow! The songs even carry you into a different space. The nuances of the narrator's voice capture things i myself may not have seen or experienced.

So.....I think I'll do both....and maybe try to incorporate them into a lesson some time.
